Which Game Server Needs How Much RAM?
Memory is the single most important sizing factor for a game server. Too little RAM leads to lag spikes, long chunk or world loading times and, in the worst case, crashes — too much simply costs money without improving performance. The table below summarises conservative, real-world RAM recommendations for all games we host. Treat the values as a starting point for a typical community server: a small vanilla server with a handful of players usually gets by at the lower end of the range, while modpacks, large worlds, many plugins or high player counts push you towards the upper end. Every game links to its dedicated hosting page, where you will find suitable plans and game-specific details.
All values refer to the memory available to the game process itself and assume a current game version without extensive modding. Modded servers — for example Minecraft modpacks or ARK with several maps and mods — can require significantly more. If you are unsure which configuration fits your project, our support team will gladly help you choose.
How Many Players per GB of RAM?
One of the most common sizing questions is how many players fit on a server per gigabyte of RAM. There is no universal answer, because games manage their worlds very differently. In classic shooters such as Counter-Strike 2 or Team Fortress 2 the map is static: each additional player consumes very little extra memory, and even full lobbies run comfortably on small configurations. Sandbox and survival games behave differently — every player explores new terrain, which keeps additional world data loaded in memory. In simulation-heavy titles such as ARK, Palworld or Satisfactory, the world itself (creatures, bases, factories) consumes most of the memory, almost regardless of how many people are online. The guidelines below are deliberately conservative rules of thumb. Mods, plugins, world size, view distance and even the game version can shift the numbers considerably, so always plan a buffer instead of running your server permanently at its limit.
Server type
Examples
Rule of thumb
Classic shooters
Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2
Static maps: 2–4 GB covers even full lobbies; additional players barely increase memory usage.
Vanilla sandbox & survival
Minecraft, Valheim, Terraria, Unturned, Garry's Mod
Roughly 3–5 players per GB beyond a base of about 2 GB — depending on version, world size and view distance.
Modded servers
Modpacks, plugin-heavy setups
Plan for about half the vanilla player density; mods and plugins can double memory requirements.
Open-world simulation
ARK, Rust, Palworld, 7 Days to Die, Satisfactory
World simulation dominates: 8–16 GB is sensible even for small groups of players.
A concrete example: for a vanilla Minecraft server with around ten players, 4–6 GB is a solid choice — the same group in a heavily modded modpack should rather plan for 8–10 GB. A Palworld server, by contrast, needs its 16 GB even if only four people play, because the world simulation runs regardless of player count. When in doubt, size your server for the busy evening peak, not for the average afternoon.
Why NovaCloud for Game Server Hosting?
Choosing a host is mostly about the things you only notice when they are missing: protection during an attack, a server that is simply there when you want to play, low pings on a Friday evening and support that actually answers. That is exactly what we focus on.
DDoS protection — always included
Game servers are among the most common targets of DDoS attacks; a single frustrated player can be enough to knock an unprotected server offline. Every NovaCloud game server therefore includes DDoS protection by default — permanently and at no extra charge. Attacks are detected and filtered automatically in the background, so your community can usually keep playing while mitigation is active.
Online within minutes
There is no manual setup queue. As soon as your payment is received, your server is provisioned automatically and is typically ready within a few minutes. You receive your access credentials by email, log in to the game panel and can immediately adjust settings, upload worlds or invite your first players.
EU locations: Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Eygelshoven
Our game servers run in European datacenters in Frankfurt and Nuremberg (Germany) and in Eygelshoven (Netherlands). For players across Central Europe this means short network paths and consistently low pings — a real advantage in shooters and PvP survival games where every millisecond counts. Hosting within the EU also means your data is handled under European data protection rules.
Full control via the game panel — and people who help
You manage your server through our web-based game panel: start, stop and restart at any time, install mods and plugins, edit configuration files and transfer data via SFTP or the built-in web file explorer. And when something does not work — a mod conflict, a corrupted world, a configuration question — our support team is available around the clock.
Under the hood, every game server runs on enterprise hardware with fully dedicated resources and SSD storage, connected through fast network links. You share neither CPU time nor memory with other customers, so performance stays predictable even during busy evening hours. Combined with the included DDoS protection and round-the-clock support, this gives you a foundation to build a lasting community on — whether that is a private world for friends or a public server with an open player base.
Frequently Asked Questions about Game Servers
Answers to the questions we hear most often before the first server order.
Which game is best for a beginner server?+
Minecraft is the classic choice for a first server: setup is straightforward, the community is enormous and there is a guide for practically every question. Valheim and Terraria are also very beginner-friendly — both run reliably on smaller configurations and require very little ongoing maintenance. If you mainly want to play with a small group of friends, any of these three games is an uncomplicated, low-risk starting point that you can expand later.
Can I switch to a different game later?+
You are not permanently tied to your first choice. If your community wants to move on — say from Valheim to Palworld — contact our support team and we will help you find the best way to switch. Before any change, back up your world data via SFTP or the web file explorer so that nothing is lost and you can return to your old world at any time.
Is DDoS protection included?+
Yes, always. DDoS protection is a standard part of every NovaCloud game server — there is no extra charge and nothing you need to book or activate separately. Attacks are detected and filtered automatically so that legitimate players can keep connecting. This applies to every game and every server size, without exception.
How quickly is my server ready to play?+
Your game server is set up automatically as soon as your payment is received — in most cases it is ready within a few minutes. You will receive an email with all access credentials. After that, you can log in to the game panel straight away, adjust your server settings, install mods if you like and invite your first players.
Can I install mods and plugins?+
Yes — for games that support modding, such as Minecraft, Rust, ARK, Garry's Mod or 7 Days to Die, you can install mods and plugins conveniently through our game panel. You also have SFTP access and a web file explorer for manual uploads. Keep in mind that heavily modded servers need noticeably more RAM, so factor this into your configuration from the start.
